The star-shaped fruits burst at the belly seam when ripe and the shiny reddish brown seeds are revealed. The fruits are then dried in the sun and lose about 3/4 of their weight. Store dry and airtight, they even keep fresh for several years. A star anise tree can live up to 100 years old and bears approximately from the 7th year up to 40 kilograms of fruit per year. Star anise has a sweet, strong, licorice-like aroma and fits - used as a spice - for example with food such as duck or goose. It is also used in the production of peppercakes or in refining mulled wine. Star anise is also part of some Indian curry varieties and is also often used as an ingredient for incense sticks or incense powder, developing a strong, yet stimulating and fresh scent when smoked. Due to the high content of essential oil (4-5%), the star anise fruits are not only used as a spice, but also in natural medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine provides for both internal and external use. By pouring 1-2 teaspoons of star anise with 500 ml of hot water, you can prepare a tea. The star anise fruits are free from harmful substances and come from controlled cultivation, they can last at least 24 months after purchase.
